I have a real problem with some of the students here in the English department. Hell, I have a problem with the department as a whole. I’m so sick and tired of certain students being put on pedestals by other students and even professors. It’s stupid and absolutely disheartening for those of us who are stuck on ground level looking up at these kids who have no extra skills or smarts than we do. What makes them so special as to compare the rest of us to this guy or girl?
It’s been happening a lot. Or at least, I’ve been noticing it more and more this semester. Certain students are favorited by professors for some unknown reason which causes tension among the rest of us. I mean seriously, just because they can smooth talk their way through a paper means they’re smarter than the rest of us? Who gave you the right to move the playing field?
The other day I was sitting in the English lounge while some students studied for an upcoming test with vocab words. Even though these were English words, some of which I’ve been using since I was a child, who did they ask for help with pronunciation? The smart kids. Not the native speaker, but others who may or may not have known how it is read. Not the girl who has the inate ability to run through language rules that are engrained in me, but those who learned English as a second language. Do you understand how much that hurt? That I’m looked over for someone else based on their higher status in the department.
English students here don’t have a chance if you’re not one of the favorites. Just because you’re a goddamn veteran or you write pretty good poetry does not mean you’re better than the rest of us. It’s a known fact that English majors here have humongous egos, but this is getting ridiculous. And students aren’t the only offenders. It’s also known that certain professors favor certain students, whether for that one good paper they wrote two years ago, the fact that they share the same interests, or the fact that they write leisurely and the professor finds it good. And their favoritism shows. Hard.
I’m so sick of this. The department needs to be reset to zero. Everyone is equal. No one is better than the other. No one is smarter than the other. Not even me or the other native English speakers. Everyone should be on equal grounds in the eyes of both peers and professors. So students, stop thinking that the one guy who’s been here for eight years working on his Bachelor’s has more knowledge than anyone else. That the freshman isn’t just as smart as you. And professors, stop playing favorites. We all notice and it hurts that you don’t notice the rest of us for our accomplishments but rather compare them to the work of others. We’re all different and all have our strengths. We already live in a society where our physical aspects are compared to others. Our brains don’t need to be compared, too.
